It is 2 AM. You are peeling wet sheets off the bed for the third time this week while your person apologizes, or argues, or both. Tomorrow you get to run the whole day on four hours of sleep. Again.
If that sounds like your week, come sit by me. Lewy body does this, and it is not random. Once you know why it happens, you can get ahead of it.
Why Lewy body picks on the bladder
Lewy body does not just affect thinking. It goes after the body’s autopilot. The systems that run in the background without anyone thinking about them: blood pressure, digestion, and yes, the bladder.
Here is what that means in real life. A healthy bladder sends a polite memo. Heads up, we will need a bathroom in the next twenty minutes. With Lewy body, that memo shows up late and in all caps. NOW.
Then comes problem two. Lewy body slows the body down. Stiff muscles, careful shuffling steps, a slow launch out of the recliner. So you have an emergency bladder attached to a body that cannot hurry. That is the whole math of wet pants with Lewy body. The bladder sent the message late, and the legs got it even later.
Daytime: get ahead of the urge
Try an invitation instead of a question. “Do you need the bathroom?” almost always gets a no, because the urge is not there yet. So every two hours or so, give them a reason to walk in there with you. You have three easy options. One, make it a hand washing trip: “I’m going to wash my hands, walk with me.” Two, give them something to smell: “There’s a new lotion in the bathroom that smells so good, come smell it.” Three, ask for their help: “Can you help me with something in the bathroom?” Being needed feels wonderful. Once they are in there, the toilet is right there, and you just skipped the whole debate.
Clear the runway. Move the laundry basket, keep the door open, and light the path. When the memo says NOW, every step counts.
Dress for speed. Elastic waists win. Belts, buttons, and zippers slow down hands that are already slow.
Warm it up. A cold bathroom gets you a hard no before you even start. The environment is often the trigger, not the task. A towel warmer and a little bathroom heater changed everything for me, and these two are game changers: towel warmer and bathroom heater.
And if your person does not want you in the bathroom with them, that is not stubbornness. That is embarrassment, and honestly, who could blame them? Give them a job so they have somewhere to put their dignity: “Can you hold this towel for me?” Keep your voice matter of fact, like helping in the bathroom is the most normal thing in the world. In your house, it now is.
The brief conversation, with dignity
If leaks are happening most days, protective underwear saves everyone a lot of stress. Two things matter here.
First, the words. Call them briefs, not diapers. Diapers are for babies, and your person is not a baby. The words you choose tell them whether you still see the capable adult they have always been.
Second, the product. I recommend LivDry protective underwear because they pull on and feel like regular underwear, which means less arguing at the drawer. The tear away sides may be my favorite part. A wet brief comes off without wrestling pants all the way down, which protects everyone’s knees and everyone’s pride. Put them in the drawer where the underwear has always lived. No announcement needed.
Overnight is a different animal
Nights are wetter, and there is a real reason. All day, gravity holds extra fluid down in the legs. The minute your person lies down, that fluid heads back to the kidneys, and the body makes more urine right when you both finally want to sleep.
Lewy body adds one more twist: REM sleep disorder. Dreams get acted out, sleep gets choppy, and a person waking up confused in the dark is not going to find the bathroom gracefully. Keep the floor path clear, plug in a motion nightlight, and skip the quiz when they wake up confused. Fewer questions, more calm.
Then stack your protection. LivDry’s overnight protective underwear holds much more than the daytime kind, with leg cuffs that block side leaks for side sleepers. A bed pad under the sheet can turn a 2 AM full bed strip into a thirty second swap. Fewer middle of the night changes means more sleep for both of you, and sleep is not a luxury. It is the thing holding you together.
Start tonight
Pick one thing. Walk them to the bathroom after dinner instead of asking. Or set up overnight protection from LivDry before bed and see what a dry 2 AM feels like. Then come back and tell me how it went.
You are doing something hard, and you are doing it with love. Remember, this is hard, but we can do hard things. You do not have to figure all of this out on your own.
P.S. I am going deep on all of this in my live training, Lewy Body Dementia: What Nobody Told You, on Monday, October 26. Save your seat here.
